The author has used classical examples of Jewish persecution which every one knows is gone in the physical sense, but show how they still exist in the theoretical aspect, as the persecution is still occurring. In the next three stanzas, the poem takes the standpoint of three figures whose stories are pertinent examples of what Yevtushenko is trying to rely in this poem. First the voice of Dreyfus is used, and the stanza describes how horribly and unfairly he was treated, and how the country and its leaders turned their backs on him. There are two important literary devices used in this section. First the author puts the word pettiness on a line by itself. This is used as a declaration of what the author feels anti-Semitism is based on. It is because of pettiness that Dreyfus was accusedand further because of pettiness that he was not pardoned when it was proven that he had not committed any crime. The next important device is the description of ladies with their umbrellas. This is an image to the wealthy aristocracy of France, who not only turned their backs on Dreyfus and did not help him, but also increased the effort to have him punished unnecessarily. The next Jewish figure whom the author singles out is a boy from the town of Bielostok, where one of the most horrible pogroms ever took place. The entire stanza focuses on the image of how bad the people were who participated in the pogrom. As much as 10 to 15 million people were displaced, their ties with their families cut and their odds of going back to their homes were nonexistent. Political circumstances changed the trade alliances in Africa and led to variation in the regional origins of slaves all through the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Slaves were usually the ill-fated victims of wars, raids, and territorial expansion. The triangular trade or the Atlantic circuit explains the whole process of slave trade In the Atlantic Ocean. Their were two known systems for slavery, the old system of which was used by Africans and Arabs etc. and the new system which was used by Europeans. In the old system, slavery was neither permanent nor inherited, it was not based on race, slaves worked as servants to the owners (no hard physical labor), and 2/3 were women sold as harems. In the new system, slavery was permanent and inherited, it was based on the belief that black Africans were inferior, slaves did hard physical labor, and mainly slaves were male between the ages of 15 to 30. It would be hard to prove, however, that the transatlantic trade did not play a huge role on the development and size of slavery on the African Continent. In Europe and the New World, demand for slaves was increasing and although it was a very risky business, it has proven to be extremely lucrative. This trade has proved beneficial for the African kingdoms and states as well. It made them more powerful and wealthier. In the other hand, Sheila depicts the generational difference, considering herself modern and is morally sensible. The outsiders are fundamental figures of the plays plot. The Inspector Goole gives the impression of massiveness, solidity and purposefulness, the way J.B. An additional document that would have shown the attitude of the lower-class citizens and the women’s perspective of these technological achievements would have added authenticity to this argument. A document from the perspective of an upper-class woman in Roman or Han society would show if new technologies affected their everyday work/obligations, or if technologies were solely for the benefit of men. Another source that would have been helpful would be from a lower class woman to show the similarities and differences of the work expected of lower class and upper-class women. Men were dominate in both Roman and Han societies, but the attitude that the lower class men had of technology was excluded from the list of documents provided.
